Welcome to the Carolina North Forest!

Enjoy a visit to 750 acres of woodlands located on the University of North Carolina’s Carolina North campus, nestled between the towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro.  For more than thirty years, the Carolina North Forest (also known as the Horace Williams Tract) has offered the University, Chapel Hill and Carrboro communities a tranquil natural oasis in which to recreate, relax, and enjoy a respite from the area’s ever-changing urban landscape.

The Forest is a site rich in historical and archaeological significance. It features an abundance of ecological and wildlife assets and has hosted a diverse set of recreational activities over the years.  The Forest has tremendous potential for research and environmental rehabilitation projects as well as expanded recreational uses.  UNC Chapel Hill’s Grounds Services department - a group committed to responsibly stewarding the open spaces and natural areas of the University’s campus landscape - recognizes the Forest's intrinsic value, the importance local communities place on it and integrates these ideals into program development and decision-making.

This website describes an active management plan and activities associated with responsibly managing the Carolina North Forest.  Here you’ll find the latest news regarding events and opportunities the Forest offers as well as maps and photos of our on-going efforts to steward the forest and enhance user experiences.
