 State Courier Services Minimize

Almost all city, county, and state agencies are serviced by the State Courier Service which is a state government delivery service that operates out of Raleigh.  All first class mail and computer printout data may be sent from the University to these various departments and agencies at a reduced cost via State Courier Service, provided the proper procedures are followed (see below).  The availability of State Courier Services means that significant savings in departmental mailing costs can be realized.  The Courier service fee is 65% of US/First Class mail and is just as fast.

State Courier Service Directories are available upon request from University Mail Services, Bioinformatics Building (962-1139 or E-mail).

Procedures

  • Address mail using the proper courier box number and city.  This information is in the Courier Service Directory.
  • Place green Courier Service authorization slip (available free from Mail Center in the Bioinformatics Building) on each bundle or piece of mail.  One label may be used for a bundle of mail addressed to the same agency.
  • The State Courier Service is for use by UNC departments only and is for NORMAL, DAILY correspondence. Departments sending a large volume or bulk mail via Courier are responsible for the proper sorting, bundling and packaging of the mailing.  The cost of these large bulk mailings (includes boxes of books, catalogues, large volume newsletters, journals, etc. weighing over 50 pounds) includes a $10.00 handling fee.  Call University Mail Services at 962-1139 for the requirements, advice and cost of bulk mailings or e-mail us.
  • Place properly addressed and labeled Courier Mail in your CAMPUS MAIL BOX  (not the U.S. mail box).

Courier mail will be picked up by the Campus Mail Service on our regular pickup and delivery schedule.  The State Courier will pick up all Courier mail at 8:30 p.m. and deliver it to participating agencies in Raleigh at 8:30 a.m. the next day.  Courier mail will reach other cities later that evening.

Incoming Courier mail is received at 7:00 a.m. at Bioinformatics Building and is delivered that same day.
