One of our Forest Management directives is to make the Forest available as a 'living laboratory' for the UNC, Chapel Hill, and Carrboro communities. As we've begun to learn more about what potential there is for helping people make a connection with natural spaces and systems as well as what we need to do to effectively support environmental education, we've already been contacted by several groups about working together on the land to maintain the Forest while providing a positive learning environment.
We are currently coordinating with the Middle and Elementary Schools is continuing previous efforts to control and eradicate invasive exotic plants that have become established throughout the Forest. In the past, students, teachers, and UNC students have worked with the Friends of Bolin Creek organization to get things under control; now that the Forest is being actively managed, the Forest Management Team can bring their time, resources, and expertise to bear in implementing a long-term program for the control and eradication of exotic and invasive species.
If you're interested in contributing to these projects or would like to discuss how your group can use the Forest for advancing the goals of education and forest stewardship, please contact us at the email address below.
