Facilities Services is committed to providing a safe and healthful environment for all persons associated with the University, including faculty, staff, students, visitors, and members of the Chapel Hill community.

Safety is the responsibility of all employees and supervisors. It is important that employees continue to use safe work practices and show concern for everyone who may be affected by your work.

The Facilities Services Safety Officer directs the Division's safety and health program and makes analyses to identify safety or health problems, and determines any needed corrective actions. The Safety Officer conducts monthly safety assessments of internal shop operations and job sites to identify safety deficiencies. The office also inspects buildings, shops and operations to detect fire, health and safety hazards.

The Safety Officer conducts several safety training classes (Hazard Communications, Forklift, Lock-out/Tag-out, and Confined Space Entry) and serves as a permanent member and technical advisor for the Facilities Services safety committee.

The Safety Officer conducts risk assessment and analysis, and prepares subsequent control measure plans to minimize risks and prevent incident reoccurrences.

The Training Office distributes safety equipment for every Facilities Services employee and especially for new employees. Facilities Services Training directs the acquisition of prescription safety glasses for Facilities Services employees and manages the safety shoe program.
