TUESDAY, JUNE 9, 2009

The Orange County Solid Waste Department in conjunction with UNC’s Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling and NC Recycling Business Assistance Center is sponsoring a half day educational event for builders working within the Orange County and greater Triangle Area.

The event is titled: Get the Green Edge: The Whys and Hows  of Construction Waste Management in Orange County.

The first half of the sessions will focus on the regulatory environments surrounding the Orange County RRMO and subsequent UNC regulations/policies.  The second session of the event will feature local builders with experience and success maximizing construction waste diversion in residential and/or commercial construction.

More importantly, it is our goal to have representative from recycling firms that can handle clean wood, drywall, carpet, ceiling tiles, deconstruction/reuse, vinyl siding, shingles and other materials. Our intent is to connect the recyclers directly with builders in an informal setting.

The event is scheduled from noon to 4pm at our main office at 1207 Eubanks Road on June 9, 2009.  In the event that attendance exceeds 50 registrants, the event will relocate to the Homestead Center. A firm location decision is expected on June 1.

Venable Demolition Waste Management Results

The decommissioning and demolition of Venable Hall, an eighty year old chemistry building, took three years to plan and eight months to carry out.  Salvage and recycling were priorities from the beginning to the end of the project.  Overall, the project achieved a 61% rate of diversion from the landfill, a number that could well have been raised but for a very complicated hazardous materials situation.   This presentation explores the salvage and recycling aspect of the decommissioning and demolition process.

Getting The Green Edge
This presentation is the first in a series of Contractor Outreach workshops. It gives an overview of C&D recycling as it fits into green building trends nationally, locally, and at UNC-CH. It introduces the concept of Zero Waste and explores the advantages of source separation over using a Material Recovery Facility (MRF). Prepared by Sarah Myers.
