Fact Sheet - Animal Bedding RecyclingAnimal bedding is currently collected from all Department of Lab Animal Medicine (DLAM) research lab service areas for composting.
Material is stored in 65-gallon carts. Carts are brought to the building loading dock area when full. The material is collected by OWRR staff 3 times/week and composted at a facility in Goldston, NC. The current system has been in place since 1995. The program started collecting material from 1 location (Berryhill). OWRR now collects animal bedding from 11 sites per week. Based on current tonnage figures (FY 2001), we estimate a waste stream diversion of approximately 400 tons/year of animal bedding. The annual tonnage diverted will increase as DLAM programs expand.
