Fact Sheet - White Paper

Fact: Paper makes up 42% of the waste going into landfills and is recyclable in almost all cases.

Fact: White Office Ledger (White Paper) is a highly desirable grade and commands a good price with paper recyclers.

Source Reduction: Use unbleached white paper as often as possible. Always use both sides of the paper. Some companies are providing lower grade, lighter paper that is more easily recycled. Cut down on over-use of items like colored post-it notes. Double side copies.

Procedure for Recycling White Paper at UNC:

  1. White Paper is recycled at various locations inside campus buildings.
  2. You may put the following items in it to be recycled:
  • white copier paper
  • letterhead
  • lined notebook paper
  • computer printout
  • greenbar computer paper
  • white notecards

To inquire about receiving a white paper recycling bin, please contact the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling at 962-1442.

Next time you buy paper make sure it's made with post-consumer recycled content.

*****Contaminants include:  binder clips, food wrappers, carbon paper, photographs, newsprint, glossy magazines and tape.*****
