Of those, 66% went to subscribers, 17% were sold in newsstands, and 15% were returned unsold. These figures DO NOT account for catalogs. Fact: On average, each United States citizen generates 47 pounds of magazines and catalogs each year. Each magazine weighs approximately one-half pound. Source Reduction: The current mail-order fad has drastically increased the distribution of catalogs. If you receive unwanted catalogs, call the company and ask to be removed from their mailing list. You can also request an Orange Community Recycling junk-mail terminator kit or share magazines with friends, local nursing homes, hospitals, doctors' offices, and hairdressers. ***** Other grades of paper are considered contaminants to glossy paper recycling . Some professional journals are printed on high-quality office paper which may be recyclable as color paper rather than glossy.
