Fact: Recycling a 36-inch tall stack of newspaper saves the equivalent of about 14% of the average household electric bill. Fact: If the United States recycled half of the newspapers consumed each year, it would divert almost 6 million tons of paper from landfills. Source Reduction: Newspaper products are inherently so lightweight that additional weight reductions seem unlikely. Decreasing the number of ads in newspapers could dramatically reduce the amount of paper needed to produce them. **Brown bags and other types of paper are considered contaminants of newspaper recycling. **Sources:Miller, Chaz.
