Procedure for Recycling Newspaper at UNC:

  1. Separate newspaper from office paper and trash; inserts are okay.
  2. Place newspaper in the appropriate bins (labeled Newspaper & Magazines).
  3. Newspaper is recycled with glossy magazines at various bin locations inside campus buildings, and at outdoor recycling sites located behind most campus buildings.  Newspaper can also be recycled at walkway sites around campus.

Fact Sheet - Newspaper

Fact: Today, 62 million newspapers will be printed in the United States, and 44 million will be thrown away. That means that the equivalent of about 500,000 trees will be dumped into the landfills this week.

Fact: The largest component of trash in the landfills is newspaper (14% by volume).

Fact: Recycling a 36-inch tall stack of newspaper saves the equivalent of about 14% of the average household electric bill.

Fact: If the United States recycled half of the newspapers consumed each year, it would divert almost 6 million tons of paper from landfills.

Source Reduction: Newspaper products are inherently so lightweight that additional weight reductions seem unlikely. Decreasing the number of ads in newspapers could dramatically reduce the amount of paper needed to produce them.

**Brown bags and other types of paper are considered contaminants of newspaper recycling. **
