Reuse has always been a common practice in most American households; we eat
with reusable utensils, wear reusable clothes that are hung on reusable hangers, and use
reusable dishtowels to dry reusable dishes.
Many of us, however, do not consider the
opportunities for reusing items in our offices. This is an essential step in curtailing
waste generation since most materials that enter the landfill originate in the workplace.
The following is a description of UNC programs that can be used to reduce office waste. If
you would like more information about any of these programs or other reduction, reuse and
recycling programs, email our Office Manager, Amy
Preble, or call her at 962-1442. We also have a page on Environmental
Education at UNC-CH.
Reuse cardboard boxes: If your office is moving or
needs extra boxes, the UNC Press Warehouse makes reused cardboard
boxes available to UNC employees. For more information or to make
a request, call the Warehouse at 942-5341.
|
Reuse polystyrene peanuts: If you receive packaging containing
styrofoam peanuts, UNC Scientific Supply will reuse them
- Collect polystyrene packaging peanuts ONLY (no other polystyrene
materials such as cups, plates or large packing blocks).
- Place the polystyrene packing peanuts in a box no larger than 21"
by 21" by 24"
- Address box to:

- Place your name and phone # in the upper right hard corner
of the box.
- Place in campus mail for delivery
|
Reuse Printer Toner Cartridges: UNC General Storeroom
reuses spent toner cartridges.
When your cartridge runs out of ink/toner you can bring it to the
General Storeroom or have it picked up when your new one is delivered.
The phone number for the General Storeroom is 966-5671.
|
Reuse office supplies and equipment: If your office is no
longer using old furniture, electronics or office equipment, the
Surplus Property Warehouse will pick it up for reuse by someone
else. Simply:
- Send them a memo including:

Student reuse of furniture and clothing:
At the end of the
year don't just throw away unwanted furniture and clothing. If they
are in good condition, someone else can use them. Residence hall
donation programs are in place during move-out, and at other times
look to take unwanted things to local thrift shops (if they're in good
condition).

Transparency Film: Every year approximately 15 million pounds of polyester from
transparency film is deposited in landfills.
To recycle these on-campus, send used transparency film through
campus mail to the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling, CB#
1800.
You can recycle used transparency
film on you own through the 3M corporation (
http://www.mmm.com/office).
If you call 1-800-952-4059, 3M will send a free transparency recycling
kit and provide you with information on purchasing recycled-content
transparencies.

Tyvek
(Express Mail/Fed Ex) Envelopes: Call (800)

Old Medical
Journals: Medical students at UNC
collect current textbooks and journals

project by providing a drop box in the Health
Sciences library for collecting materials. Watch for this
project. It usually takes place during the Spring Semester.
Overseas libraries
may accept recent journals and texts up to eight years old. For a
partial list of contacts for overseas donations, check these
