Research
and clarification regarding recycled-content
paper use on campus
Memo
from Interim Chancellor William O. McCoy on the use of
non-recycled vs.
minimum 30%
post-consumer content recycled paper (In response to EO #156).
Not
counting printing services and individual departmental purchases, we use
about 97.9 million sheets of recycled paper per year
(FY 2001 - 2002).
Carolina Copy was one of the
departments that tested recycled paper on campus. They now use 30%
recycled paper in the copiers. They use 11,700 cases of paper a year (40
cases per pallet, 10 reams per case x 500 sheets per ream = 58.5 million
sheets per year). About 20% of their machines are self-service which means
that departments put the paper in themselves. Of these we do not know how
many use paper with a recycled content of 100%, 30% or other. While there
would be logistical issues, Alvin Garner said he’d look into the cost
difference and consider the possibility of offering the 100% to customers,
passing on the cost difference to them if they select this option. (Alvin
Garner)
ATN also tested the recycled
paper a couple years back. Now their computer labs on campus are using
the 100% content paper in their printers. They printed about 7 million
pages last year—AND—they have their printers set to default to double
sided! (Gina Shoe)
AIS uses 30% for their
printing operations and they print approximately 10.8 million sheets per
year. (Jim
Hodgin and Ray DeCristofaro)
Printing Services uses the 30% paper in their satellite copy centers.
Their “house stock” contains at least 20% recycled content. I was not
able to get quantities from them at this time. (Susan Anderson and Jim
McHale)
All purchases on
state contract
http://www.doa.state.nc.us/PandC/recycled.htm,
through the warehouse, and at Staples specify a minimum of
30 percent post consumer content. 30% and 100% recycled paper is
available from State Contract and the General Storeroom.
21.6 million sheets of 30% or greater
recycled paper were purchased last year from the general storeroom and
Staples (combined). (Jim Daley and Matt Todd, 34 cases per pallet)
I hope this clarifies some things
about UNC Chapel Hill’s commitment to using recycled paper! All of the
people I spoke with said that the paper was working well with their
machines and they supported the recycled paper use! They listed cost as
the main reason for not converting to the 100%, not performance.
I would not be true to my cause if I
didn’t mention the further need for waste reduction, seeking to increase
our standard to 100% if possible, and making sure that 30% or greater is
used on all our printing needs including business cards, envelopes,
special print jobs, etc. But I must also say that I am very proud of the
successes listed above!
